Famous for its wood carvings, Ortisei (Urtijei in German) is the largest community in the pretty Val Gardena region of Südtirol, northern Italy. Sprawling along the tree-covered valley in the heart of the 𝐃𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬, the traffic-free main street and St Anthony Square are lined with typical Alpine architecture. Tall buildings with frescoes and colourful window boxes house boutiques and cafés at street level with accommodation above. One of the highlights of the town is the elegant 𝐂𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐁𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐨, an imposing hotel famous for its spa and gourmet dining. The beautiful 18th century parish church with its bulbous dome is dedicated to St Ulrich, a former bishop. The town is named after him and he is featured on the coat of arms. Stroll along the streets admiring the wood-carved sculptures and bronze statues before taking a scenic walk or riding up 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐝𝐚 Peak in a cable car.
