🌸✨ Yoruba Traditional Wedding – Awejewemu Igbeyawo Ibile
“Awejewemu” means “show of elegance / display of beauty” — and that’s exactly what a Yoruba wedding is:
a public celebration of family, unity, honor, tradition, and love 💛

🎀 Before the Wedding Day ( Introduction)
Introduction (Mo mi n mo e):
The groom’s family visits the bride’s family formally. They state their intention:

“We have seen a beautiful flower in your garden, and we seek permission to pluck it.”
It's a very polite, symbolic meeting.

List Presentation:
The bride’s family gives a list of items the groom must provide, including:
Kolanuts (obi)
Alligator pepper (ataare)
Bitter kola (orogbo)
Palm wine
Local gin or schnapps
Yams
Sugarcane
Honey
Cash gifts ( bride price)

The groom and his family gather the items to bring on the traditional wedding day!

👑 The Traditional Wedding Day (Engagement Ceremony – Igbeyawo)
Venue Setup:
The hall or family compound is decorated in rich colors (gold, wine, royal blue, green). Big canopies, talking drums, and traditional bands are ready!

Alaga Ijoko and Alaga Iduro:
Two MCs (one from the bride’s side, one from the groom’s) run the event like joyful negotiators 💃🏽 — with jokes, singing, dancing, and prayers.

Groom’s Entrance (Awejewemu indeed!):
The groom dances in first, escorted by his friends and family.
He prostrates (dobale) flat on the floor to honor the bride's family — showing respect and humility. His friends sometimes prostrate too!

Bride’s Entrance:
🎉 The moment everyone waits for!
She is dressed in full Asooke (traditional woven fabric) — usually matching her groom’s outfit (called asoebi).
Adorned with beads, coral necklaces, ipele (shawl), and a headtie (gele) tied dramatically!

The Reading of Proposal Letter:
A letter from the groom’s family is read aloud — asking formally for the bride’s hand.

Acceptance Ceremony:
The bride’s family reads a letter of acceptance if they agree — usually full of blessings and prayers.

Exchange of Rings or Gifts:
Rings, wristwatches, Bibles, or Qurans are exchanged depending on religious background.

Blessings by Parents and Elders:
The parents bless the new couple — sprinkling water, praying in Yoruba or English, giving spiritual advice.

Presentation of Bride:
The bride dances out again with pride and is formally handed over to the groom’s family 💛

Feasting and Partying:
Food, jollof rice, amala, iyan (pounded yam), egusi soup, peppered meat, drinks flow freely!
Musicians sing praises to families — "Oko iyawo! Iyawo wa! Ayaba! Oba mi ooo!" 🎶

🎀 Key Yoruba Words You’ll Hear:
Igbeyawo = Wedding

Iyawo = Bride
Oko = Groom
Aso Oke = Traditional Yoruba cloth
Alaga = MC/Host
Dobale = Prostration (honor gesture)
Asoebi = Family and friends wearing matching outfits
Owo Iyawo = Bride price / dowry
Ounje = Food
Orin Igbeyawo = Wedding songs
Alaga Ijoko / Alaga Iduro = Mistress of ceremonies (for sitting side / standing side)

🌟 Summary:
A Yoruba traditional wedding is:
A mix of fun, spirituality, family pride, and deep respect
Colorful, musical, food-filled, and joyful
A "royal affair" where the bride and groom are celebrated like kings and queens 👑

It’s not just a ceremony — it’s a deep honoring of history, ancestors, love, and future generations.
No wonder Yoruba weddings are called Awejewemu — "the ultimate show of beauty and pride." 🌟
