Kuopio | Timelapse 24 | The May Aurora

A rare aurora lit up the Kuopio skies on the intervening night of 10-11 May 2024. Here in Finland, one of the most sought-after destinations for aurora hunting, May is usually not the preferred month as the skies remain bright throughout the night. Unfortunately, a 'severe geomagnetic storm', considered to be extreme in decades decided to hit the Earth bringing in a spectacular show even in Southern Europe. Unlike in winter, when I search the northern skies for traces of aurora, this time I had to look south. I just wish the sky was a bit more black. This clip was shot during the darkest part of the night around 1.30 am.
