Even with an election, Bangladesh would face the same problem, the same chaos: Sreeradha Datta
In this episode of Latitude, host Nirupama Subramanian speaks to the academic and South Asia expert Sreeradha Datta about recent developments in Bangladesh. A professor of international relations at O.P. Jindal Global University, Datta makes sense of Bangladesh's political scenario in the post-Sheikh Hasina era, besides reported tensions between Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and the Bangladesh Army alongside other political stakeholders over the question of impending free and fair elections in the near future. She also discusses India-Bangladesh relations and what needs to be done to restore the bilateral ties that existed before Hasina's ouster in August 2024.
Context:
In May 2025, reports surfaced that Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus conveyed through a representative that he was going to step down because of non-cooperation by various stakeholders. The announcement raised concerns about more uncertainty in Bangladesh and also hinted that the continuing disorder in the country was the work of “defeated forces” and a foreign power. While the 84-year-old Yunus has since stepped back from that decision, the uncertainty continues amid reports that differences have developed between him and the Bangladesh Army.
Highlights:
Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus' decision to step down and then withdraw the same
Bangladesh's present political scenario and status of free and fair elections in the near future
Current state of India-Bangladesh relations
Impact of India's restrictions on Bangladeshi exports
Impact of Bangladesh-Pakistan ties on India's foreign policy in South Asia
Why India should reconsider its support to Sheikh Hasina in Bangaldesh
Future of Awami League in Bangladesh politics
Perfect for:

People interested in Modi's policy towards India's neighbour countries
Those who are interested in how Bangladesh and Pakistan are rebuilding ties
