Azerbaijani soldiers entered the district of Agdam on Friday as part of the agreement to end hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh, brokered by Russia.

Russian peacekeepers were overseeing the transfer of the area from the Armenian side as part of the deal.

"The role of the Russian military contingent is to ensure the safety of civilians. In strict accordance with the reached agreements [we] provide the withdrawal of Armenian troops from the territory. They have already withdraw," said Andrey Volkov, the chief of staff of the Russian military contingent.

Following weeks of hostilities, Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a Russian-brokered deal to end the fighting over the Nagorno-Karabakh region on November 9.

Under the terms of the deal, 1,960 Russian peacekeepers will be deployed in the disputed region to monitor the ceasefire.
