Understanding Estrangement
Family rifts are a common regret for older adults who are reaching the end of life. Many haven’t spoken with a child or a sibling for several decades, but the process of reconciliation can feel extremely daunting. Surprisingly, there is very little research on the concept of estrangement and how it is addressed in family therapy. In this edition of Family Matters, Dr. Karl Pillemer talks about his findings from the Cornell Estrangement and Reconciliation Project. The conversation also explores how Bowen theory offers a unique perspective on family rifts through the concept of cutoff.
