Dozens of people have already died outside the gates to Kabul airport. Thousands are still trying to leave Afghanistan and are crowding against the compound's fences, as international military personnel complete evacuations before the final US withdrawal. The European Union and the UK have called for an extension to the withdrawal deadline. But the Taliban responded with a warning that any delay would be met with unspecified "consequences".
