BACKYARD RETAINING WALL CONTAINS 380-MILLION-YEAR-OLD REEF 🪸🧱😂

A Jamestown, New York man spent three summers hauling flat stones from Chadakoin Creek to build a retaining wall behind his garage. Liked the lighter ones — easier to carry, stacked clean. His neighbor, a retired geologist, noticed honeycomb patterns in the stone faces last April. Asked to examine one with a hand lens. Every stone was a tabulate coral fossil. Devonian period — roughly 380 million years old. The wall contained over 1,400 specimens across nine species, three never previously catalogued in western New York. The University of Buffalo offered $23,000 for the entire structure. He agreed on one condition: they had to build him a new one. Twelve grad students showed up with a flatbed truck. Took them four days.
