Why Rajesh Khanna refused to work with Amitabh Bachchan after Namak Haram

In namak haram This was the second and last time Amitabh and rajesh khanna shared screen space after Anand due to the intense rivalry between the two. Rajesh Khanna was obsessed with his character dying in his movies. He believed that if his character dies in a movie, he will get the sympathy of the audience and hence the movie would be a hit. Incidentally, almost all his movies in which his character dies, like Aaradhna, Anand and Safar, were blockbusters. It so happened while filming the climax of Namak Haraam that director Hrishikesh Mukherjee had planned that Amitabh Bachchans' character would die. But superstar Rajesh Khanna was not happy with this decision as he feared that his rival Amitabh Bachchan would get all the audience's sympathies and hence he would not get enough emphasis. Especially after giving five back to back flop films, he was really desperate to get back. Khanna had a long discussion with Hrishikesh Mukherjee to change the climax and to kill his character instead of Bacchans and even went to the extent to threatening him of leaving the film. Ultimately, Hrishikesh Mukherjee told both the actors to come to the set the next day, where the death scene was to be shot and whoevers photograph will be put with the garland for the funeral, he would the one who would have to die. The next morning everyone came to the set to see Rajesh Khanna's photograph mounted along with a garland of flowers. When u watch the movie, you will observe that the death of Rajesh Khanna's character was unnecessary. But he wasn't concerned. He continued to ask his directors to kill his character in the end of all his films.
