Displaced People in CAR Face Terrible Living Conditions
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been carrying out approximately 4,000 to 5,000 medical consultations per week at the airport in Central African Republic (CAR) capital, Bangui. MSF is running a 60-bed clinic and three health posts in the airport, where around 40,000 people have taken refuge.
MSF teams are primarily dressing wounds, abscesses and burns, and treating respiratory tract infections and malaria. They are also assisting deliveries, providing newborn care, treatment for malnutrition and referring medical and surgical emergencies to hospital facilities in the city.
In the first two months of 2014, MSF treated more than 530 patients for violence-related wounds.
As the rainy season approaches, conditions in the camp are likely to get worse. MSF is providing water and sanitation services including the construction of 216 latrines and supplying up to 600 cubic meters of water every day. Go to www.doctorswithoutborders.org to learn more.
