Scoring Movies In Pro Tools, Part Three: Tempos, Time Signatures, MIDI Instruments -- Go!

In the last two installments of this series, we discussed the details involved with creating a session and importing video into our ProTools session.

Now we're ready to get a general overview for tempos we'll be using for different sections of our video, create a timeline with markers for quick reference, insert some midi instruments into the session, and begin to sketch out musical themes and ideas that both underscore action and generally enhance the mood and the intent of the video.

Beginning a measure at a specific spot in the timeline, independent of the previous measure (such as the beginning frame of an action you want to underscore) makes precisely-timed musical cues easy and eloquent. You would otherwise have to endlessly fudge with the length of the measure preceding the action you'd like to underscore — a big time-consuming pain in the ass.

Memory locations are also commonly known as markers, and most DAWs use them. Pro Tools' use of Makers/Memory Locations is elegantly employed, easy to use, and highly functional.

Next installment: expanding sketches into orchestrations, using the MIDI and score windows, and exporting key instrument parts to Sibelius for live performance.
