Interpersonal Communication refers to the exchange of information, emotions, ideas, and feelings verbally and/or non-verbally face-to-face.

Interpersonal Communication is a two-way process between two or more people.

Interpersonal Communication Skills

- Communication – Includes oral and written words, talking, listening, and presenting.

- Courtesy – Includes being courteous, well-mannered, business protocol.

- Flexibility – Includes versatility, adjusting, adapting.

- Integrity – Includes being truthful, versatile, morals, and principles.

- Interpersonal skills – being amiable, pleasant, optimistic.

- Attitude – Being confident, cheerful, positive.

- Responsibility – Resourceful, dependable.

- Teamwork – Synergic, helpful

Elements of Interpersonal Communication

- The Communicators – Both the sender and the receiver of the message are referred to as communicators.

- The Communique – Refers to the message that is conveyed through various means like tone, touch.

- Noise – The existing gap between message sent and received is often filled with noise that includes distractions, language barrier or jargons.

- Feedback – It is the response from the recipient of the message back to the sender.

- Context – It is the basis of the message that is being sent and received correctly and is dependent upon environmental factors.

- Channel – Refers to the means through which the communication process takes place.

Importance of Interpersonal Communication at Workplace

- The manager can keep the employees in the loop about business strategies and goals through internal, offline, and online communications.

- Promotes transparency and trust in the workplace.

- Aids in change management efforts.

- Promotes company culture and a harmonious environment.

- Encourages in gaining employee recognition.

- Minimizes rumours, gossip and miscommunication.

Technical skills vs Interpersonal Skills

1. Technical skills are all about intelligence quotient whereas Interpersonal Skills is about emotional intelligence.

2. In Technical skills, rules are rigid whereas in Interpersonal Skills the rules can be changed.

3. Technical skills can be tested easily whereas Interpersonal Skills are difficult to test.

4. Both Technical Skills and Interpersonal Skills can be acquired over time.
