The May 2021 Breach of the Month goes to the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack. The company, which transports gasoline, diesel, and natural gas across the East Coast of the U.S., suffered a two-pronged cyber-attack which culminated in ransomware forcing the company to shut down their pipeline. The resulting fuel shortage disrupted other fields and industries. Eventually, Colonial Pipeline CEO Joseph Blount announced to The Wall Street Journal that his company agreed to pay its cyber-attackers $4.4 million to bring the ransomware to an end.
