Julia Holter was interviewed by Professor Ramona Gonzalez on April 24th as part of a songwriting lecture series sponsored by Occidental College. With consideration of the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, the interview was conducted virtually via Zoom.
This event was live streamed on Twitch as a means of sharing the discussion freely with any audience that had an interest in songwriting discussion.
Holter is an acclaimed singer-songwriter and long-time friend to Professor Gonzalez. The two have collaborated previously on a musical-crossover dubbed "Nite Jewelia", an affectionate nod to Professor Gonzalez's artistic name mixed with Holter's.
Julia released her sixth commercial album "Avery" on October 26, 2018. In addition to her commercial releases, Julia has produced three independent albums, with "Phaedra Runs to Russia" seeing its release in 2007. She has also output singles, various EPs and collaborative music works throughout her artistic journey.
Julia Holter is an alumna to the University of Michigan, having earned her Bachelor's Degree in Composition. She continued her creative pursuits at the California Institute of the Arts, working with guitarist/composer Michael Pisaro; and she had been awarded another degree in composition for her time in CalArts.
Professor Ramona Gonzalez is an alumna of Occidental College, holding a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy. She performs under the moniker "Nite Jewel", having done so as early as 2008 when she was still an undergraduate with Occidental College.
Twelve years later, she is pursuing her PhD in Musicology with UCLA while teaching songwriting and audio technology courses. Ramona holds four album releases, multiple EPs, various collaborations and DJ mixes under her belt of experience as a musician.
