Discourse Analysis | Difference Between Discourse Analysis And Pragmatics | Lecture 74
In language, there are many things which are beyond the words, although these things are not disconnected to words. It means sometimes we don’t have to look at language components but rather we have to look how those components are using.
The word “discourse” defined as “language beyond the sentence;” therefore, the study of “discourse analysis” is concerned with the study of language of texts and conversations, speech, etc. In many of last chapters (Grammar, Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics, etc) we concentrated on the accurate representation of forms and structure. However, as a language user, we are capable of going beyond this distinction of accurate and inaccurate forms and structures.
In newspapers, we just find fragments like:
Trains collide, two die (we come to know what really happened that the two trains collided and in this collision two passengers were dead). We know that the first part (trains collide) cause the second incident (two die). Similarly we find at food corners “buy 1, get 2 free.” There is a condition that if you buy 1 then you get 2 free. We have this ability to create complex discourse using just fragments. [ Yule, G. (2017) The Study of Language (6th edition) Cambridge University Press ]
Difference between Pragmatics & Discourse Analysis:
There is not a sharp boundary between discourse and pragmatics
The main difference is that in Pragmatics we look at the words meaning regarding context and there involves a sentence, a fragment and structure as well.
In discourse, we consider a text/conversation, a paragraph as a whole and how the connections between words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs and ideas are created.
A text coherence does not depend simply on cohesive devices (firstly, secondly, thirdly, moreover, and, but, etc) but how the ideas are ordered.
