XB-70 Valkyrie: America’s Mach 3 Super Bomber

The United States Air Force Strategic Air Command's nuclear-armed, deep-penetration supersonic strategic bomber, designated B-70, had the North American Aviation XB-70 Valkyrie as its prototype. The six-engined Valkyrie, created by North American Aviation in the late 1950s, could cruise for thousands of kilometers at Mach 3+ while flying at 72,000 feet, making it a definite candidate to attack Russia with nuclear weapons during the Cold War.

And yet, the bomber was canceled as time and new technology made the X B-70 sadly obsolete. It was way back in the early 1960s when the US Air Force developed the XB-70 Valkyrie, which was the largest and fastest bomber ever built. However, the aircraft—nearly two hundred feet long, thirty-one feet tall at the tail, and with a maximum gross weight of five hundred twenty-one thousand pounds—was eventually deemed obsolete, and shut down by next-generation enemy defense missiles and fast-rising costs to keep it afloat.
