dedicated to Pedro Figari (1861-1938)

His father, Juan Figari de Lazaro, was emigrating from Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy to Buenos Aires, Argentina when his ship sank, and swimming he reached the shores of Montevideo, where he settled. Pedro Figari was born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1861, and spent much of his childhood on a farm in what is now downtown Tres Cruces, facing a port of Montevideo Bay. In this semi-rural neighborhood, a young Figari gets in touch with aspects of society that would eventually become the subjects he developed in his painting. It is estimated that during almost 15 years of his life, he had created over 4,000 paintings. A great portion of his work focuses on the Afro-Uruguayan community, and the memories of his youth. "I have always lived on the margins of written poetry, like the most mystical of the uncouth, and I feel human: I laugh, cry, suffer, moved, I tremble and am utterly startled, and submit mad like a lover to my dreams. As I approach the end, without knowing why, suddenly I feel the irresistable desire to display my dreams, believing them to be good, and if they hold some human essence they are good, and I hope they live, they are my guide". Su padre, Juan Figari de Lázaro, de Santa Margherita Ligure, emigraba a Buenos Aires pero su barco naufragó, y él nadó hasta Montevideo donde se radicó. Nació en Montevideo en 1861. Durante la adolescencia de Pedro, habitaron muchos años en una chacra donde ahora es la zona céntrica de Tres Cruces, que tenía costa sobre la parte de la bahía que más tarde se rellenó y urbanizó. En esa zona semi rural tuvo Figari contacto con aspectos de la sociedad que luego fueron temas que desarrolló en su pintura. Se estima que durante casi 15 años de su vida, creó más de 4.000 óleos. Una gran parte de su trabajo se concentró en la comunidad Afro-Uruguaya, y en los recuerdos de su juventud, sus recuerdos de Candombe.

"Viví siempre al margen de la poesía escrita, como pudo hacerlo el más místico chanflón: y me siento humano, río; lloro; sufro; emocionado, vibro, me sobresalto y mucho, entregándome amante a mis sueños, loco. Al declinar, sin saber por qué, de pronto siento irresistible el deseo de exhibir mis sueños, pensando que son buenos; y si hay por dentro humana miga, lo son, y aspiro que vivan: son ellos mi guía".
