Soledad by Alfonso Montes

Soledad (solitude or loneliness) from 5 Endechas by Alfonso Montes. Played by Phil McKelliget on a Masaru Kohno guitar. Published by Chanterelle ECH769.

Alfonso Montes was born in Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela in 1955. He studied guitar with the great Antonio Lauro before moving to London where he studied under the guitarist-composer John Duarte. Later he was appointed cultural attaché for the Venezuelan Embassy in London. His output as a composer includes concertos, music for film and theatre, and, of course, many fine pieces for the guitar. Alfonso Montes has created his own individual style which is deeply rooted in the Venezuelan national tradition but is also influenced by the European environment in which he has lived for many years. Since 1983 he has performed worldwide as one half of the Duo Montes-Kircher, the Kircher half being his German wife Irina. Soledad comes from a book of five Endechas, or laments, each piece dedicated to a lost friend.
