Laparoscopic paravaginal repair is a procedure to repair a prolapse on the front wall of the vagina (cystocele). In some cases a cystocele develops because the front vaginal wall tears away from its lateral attachment to the pelvic sidewalls, resulting in a paravaginal defect. When this happens, a simple anterior repair is not appropriate, as it won't correct the problem. In women with a cystocele arising from a paravaginal defect, the most appropriate surgical procedure is a paravaginal repair.

What does the operation involve?
A paravaginal repair is performed under a general anaesthetic through keyhole incisions (laparoscopically). It entails stitching the lateral aspects (sides) of the front vaginal wall back to their original points of attachment on the pelvic side walls, known as the arcus tendineus. This restores the bladder and the vagina to their normal anatomical positions.
