Forbes Robinson: That God is Great (Handel)
Peter Forbes Robinson (1926-1987) sings the bass aria, "That God is Great" from Handel's 6th Chandos Anthem, "O Praise the Lord With One Consent". Conducted by David Willcocks in the Chapel of King's College, Cambridge in 1966.
What is interesting about this recording is the way in which the bass singer's line leads and carries the orchestra - that is, Handel intended it to act as the very foundation of the orchestra. Forbes Robinson is clearly aware of this, and exploits it fully. So this is quite different from the traditional singer-accompanied-by-instrumentalists. It's an integrated whole, and the credit for this goes not just to Handel but to the performance also.
