Columbia Mule Days 2018

Join Joe for a trip to Columbia Mule Days in Columbia, Tennessee, April 2-7, 2018
Joe has lots of footage of the competitions, parade and key players.

Meet Louise Mills who is one of 40 volunteers who make this event possible.
She gives us a little history of the Mule Days, which has been going on in some form or other since the early 1900's. The official Mule Days started in 1934, had a lapse during the 50's and 60's but was resurrected in 1974 by the Maury County Burrow and Saddle Club. It has grown every year since then.

The event begins with a wagon train in which 50-100 wagons travel for three days before the event opening and concludes with a parade though town.

Here are some of the events:
Mini-Mule Show
Draft Mule Show
Gaited Mule Show
Western Mule show
Mule Pull
Wagon Train
Log Pulling Competition

Joe interviews Ben Tennison, editor of Western Mule Magazine about the origins of his magazine (started in 1994) and explains that the "western" part of the name refers to the type of riding. They are located in Missouri.
He explains that mules are used for the same activities that they always have been - trail riding and mountainous terrain. Mules are especially surefooted, docile, easier to ride, and have smaller feet, making the ride more gentle than on a horse.

There is also an arts and crafts market, dancing, entertainment and plenty of good food.

Following the Mule Days footage, Stacy Lyn Harris shows us how to prepare sumptuous BBQ ribs.
