THE LOST COSTUME
Prato’s Museo del Tessuto launches crowdfunding to restore costumes from the première of Puccini’s Turandot

The last great opera by Giacomo Puccini, Turandot, premiered at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on April 25, 1926. The rich costumes, inspired by the orient were designed by Luigi Sapelli, better known as Caramba. With time, these cotumes were lost… until the Museo del Tessuto received, just recently, an old trunk containing costumes, wigs and jewelry that belonged to the Pratese soprano Iva Paccetti. Curators realized that two of these costumes were the originals from Turandot, thought lost forever.
The state of conservation of the newly found robes is particularly bad. Time, fragile materials, frequent use and abuse and improper storage have damaged the precious works. Both costumes need important restoration in order to be shown to the public. In particular, the crowdfunding project hopes to support the restoration of the second costume that will require months of work by highly specialized staff. Various parts of the beautiful woven fabric, decorated with metallic thread, present holes and lacerations as well as dirt.
Once restored, these spledid costumes will be the centerpiece of a temporary exhibition about Puccini’s Turandot, in program at the Museo del Tessuto in the Spring of 2020.
