Tone Targeting in 1, 4, 5 Blues Solos Using Guide Tones

Here's a more effective way of soloing over 1, 4, 5 blues progressions than what most guitarists are taught.

Most guitarists use a single pentatonic or blues scale pattern through the 1 4 5 chord changes. But you can turn a typical blues solo into a memorable solo by having taking into account the chord changes. A big part of that is being aware of each chord's tones and being able to confidently target these tones whenever the chord changes.

The approach we introduce in this video is to use blues guide tones - the 3 and 7 of each chord. It's a great way to play to the chord but also do so organically and without much movement. You'll hear this most often in "major" blues like Jump Blues and Rockabilly, but it's helpful for all blues.
