NSE Just Made It Possible - Buy Gold in Your Demat Account.

On May 4, 2026, NSE launched something that changes gold investing forever in India.

Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR).

Think of it as "demat gold" — digital certificates representing physical gold, stored in SEBI-accredited vaults, traded on the stock exchange like shares.

How it works:
→ Buy 100 mg (about ₹1,500) to 1 kg or more
→ Each EGR represents physical gold (995 or 999 purity)
→ Stored in SEBI-approved vaults (₹50 crore minimum net worth vault managers)
→ Credited to your demat account (NSDL/CDSL)
→ Trade like stocks (9 AM to 11:30 PM)
→ T+1 settlement
→ Physical delivery option anytime — withdrawal request valid for 3 days
→ ZERO GST on trading
→ 3% GST applies ONLY if you convert to physical gold

Why this matters:

PHYSICAL GOLD — storage hassle, purity doubts, making charges (15-25%), insurance needed
DIGITAL GOLD (Paytm, PhonePe) — NOT SEBI-regulated. SEBI warned investors in November 2025 about fraud risk
GOLD ETFs — convenient but no physical delivery option
SGB SCHEME — quietly discontinued in 2024
GOLD JEWELLERY — average 15-20% loss on resale (making charges + wastage)

EGR solves ALL of these:
→ SEBI-regulated (unlike Paytm/PhonePe gold)
→ Physical delivery available (unlike Gold ETFs)
→ Small denominations (unlike physical bars)
→ Standardised purity (unlike jewellery)
→ Exchange-traded transparency (unlike OTC digital gold)

Action plan:
1. Allocate 5-10% of your portfolio to gold (standard CFP recommendation)
2. Shift Paytm/PhonePe digital gold to EGR (regulated migration)
3. For new gold allocation — use EGR as default

Note: BSE launched EGR in October 2022 but adoption was slow. NSE's launch in May 2026 brings massive liquidity. Gold ETF AUM grew 2,600% in last decade to ₹1.7 lakh crore — EGR could capture significant share now.
