This effect was actually real in Hocus Pocus

You won't believe this surprising fact about how they pulled off the scene where Billy removes his stitches? Makeup artist, Tony Gardner went to confirm in an interview with bloody disgusting (source: https://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/3482877/hocus-pocus-tony-gardner-shares-never-seen-photos-set/) that they did this effect practically with live moths. They essentially created a “mouth rig” for Doug Jones aka Billy Butcherson. This “mouth rig” served as a latex pocket that they could store the moths in and prevent them going down Doug Jones’ throat. The latex pocket had a small hole in the back of it so Jones could cough some air through to launch the dust and send the moths flying. Explained.
