Brief Political History of the Dominican Republic

This video explores the basics of Dominican history and politics to explain why the Dominican Republic, followed an authoritarian path well into the 20th century. In particular, it explores why it gained independence three times, how it ended up with one of the worst dictators in the world Rafael Trujillo and why it has been so difficult to consolidate a democracy that looks out for all Dominicans. It begins with Columbus, goes through Juan Pablo Duarte, Lilis, Trujillo Balaguer and ends with the presidency of Luis Abinader.
