How Recycling Works in Austria (It’s Strict)

Recycling in Austria is very structured and depending on where you live, the rules can slightly vary. This is how we sort our waste at home in Lower Austria.

Lightweight packaging like plastic, cans and metal goes into the yellow bag (Gelber Sack), which is collected once a month.

Bottles and cans with a deposit symbol have to be returned to the store. You get money back for each one, which encourages people to return them instead of throwing them away.

Glass is collected at home and then brought to public containers, where you separate white glass and colored glass.

Paper and cardboard go into a separate bin in the yard and are picked up once a month.

Organic waste like food scraps goes into the bio bin, which is collected regularly depending on your area.

Everything that cannot be recycled goes into general waste (Restmüll), which in our case is picked up every two weeks.

Recycling systems can vary even within Austria, but overall the structure is very strict compared to many other countries.
