Frozen in Time: Archeology in Jerusalem

A moment frozen in time from 2,600 years ago.

Archaeologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority and Tel Aviv University have uncovered charred wooden beams in Jerusalem’s City of David, burned during the destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE.

Discovered during excavations at the Givati Parking Lot, the thick beams most likely formed part of the roofing of an inner courtyard. Researchers believe that plaster covering the building’s walls melted during the intense fire, covered the charred wood and helped preserve it for approximately 2,600 years.

Sometimes, history does not just live in books. It waits beneath the ground to be rediscovered.
