Behind The Frontline - General Duty Policing

When we come in for our morning shift, we are loading up with all our necessary equipment for the day, it is pretty substantial what we carry on our person. We carry our taser, our long gun as well as all the standard equipment on our belts.We have to ensure that we have a working radio, so we can always communicate with dispatch and other members. We are going to meet with management both on the watch level and the detachment level and they are going to inform us of calls that happened last night, and other stuff that may be of interest to us during the day.

“What’s going on?”

“Someone has just expressed some concern about her safety”

We just responded to a call of a possible suicidal female, she was just expressing some thoughts via email to a second party that she may be feeling down a may have a plan to leave everyone behind.

“You decided to die? They were saying you have a plan on how to do that? What would your plan be?”

“Ok what we’ll do is bring you over to the car and we will talk to you more there and we will talk to the person who called us and we can make a decision from there.

“Ok so because what you've told me, I don't have choice, ok I have top bring you to the hospital. If it was from just what the other person told us but it is because of the things you said too. I don't have a choice I have to bring you to be seen by the doctor.”

So I just arrested the female under the mental health act because I'm concerned that she is a safety risk to herself. She's not in any trouble, it’s for her own safety. Basically this law allows us to her her to a hospital for evaluation by a qualified mental health professional/doctor.

“Ya I think I just saw them drive by, we’re right here. Ya they're running reds come on. They're running red lights.
Transition to inside of police car. Sirens are sounding

“They're running reds, they're north on Sherwood. Ill try and catch up.

“They're pulling into the superstore liquor store.”

“I got them here in the parking lot I’ll be 23, superstore parking lot”

“Stay in the car, get back in the car!”
“Whats going on? Whats going on?”

“I came to pick her up, he’s trying to hold here hostage, she got in my vehicle and he started chasing me down and he tried to run me off the road a bunch of times.”

“Ok you're under arrest criminal harassment and mischief, do you understand?”
“Ok you don't have to agree with it but that’s why you're under arrest, so you understand that?

“So what happened there just shows the never ending always changing world of policing. We were just finishing dealing with the one call and just wrapping up when another call came in of someone being chased by another vehicle at high speeds. It was a pretty intense situation of everybody that was involved we are glad we were at the right place at the right time just to literally see them drive by so we could react. So now we are transporting everyone back to the detachment and we are going to take some statements and go from there and see what best outcome for this case is.”

“Control can you send me down my last 71 please.”

“10-4”

Cst. Laforest to camera

“We are currently going to a break and enter in progress. Looks like the owner of the Recreational Vehicle has the suspect in custody.”

“Inside their trailer.”

“How many people are there?

“I don't know.”

Cst. Laforest yells out

“This is the Police!”

“Ok I want to see your hands OK!!?”
“How many are there of you?”
“How many 2 only?”
“2? ok get out, you're under arrest for break and enter.”

“He’s your buddy and you don't know his last name?

“Do you know this lady or this man at all?

“no”

“You've never seen them before?

“No”

“Right now we are back at the detachment, we have lodged all 3 prisoners. We have seized a bunch of property. So we have to go through all these bags.”

“Just a broken crack pipe no drug with it though.”
