ETHIOPIA: DANAN: FAMINE - PEOPLE HEAD FOR FEEDING CENTRES
(17 Apr 2000) English/Nat
Ethiopians continue to flee from the bush as their livestock is killed by the drought.
They head for feeding centres like Danan.
The population of the small village in the dry plains of southeastern Ethiopia has grown to three-thousand as news spread that food and water could be found here.
Muslino Muhamed walked for two days to reach Danan in the hope of finding some sustenance for her family.
SOUNDBITE (Somali)
"We have lost all our animals. everything we have. So what else can we do but come here?"

But food supplies arrives sporadically - there's simply not enough to go round.
Children are particularly vulnerable - many die of malnutrition and disease and all are in need of milk and medicines
SOUNDBITE (English)
"More people keep on arriving, joining the others here, The day before yesterday, 300 people arrived."

Water tankers - organised Save the Children and the private relief agency Ogaden Welfare Service - bring water to Danan.
But the deliveries are barely enough for the number of people at the village.
Elders of the village are responsible for a fair distribution of the food and water and use their seniority - and tough measures - to apportion the scarce supplies.
Despite the food coming in, graves are still being dug.
