A Seven-Year-Old Was Killed By a Train. The Coroner Said It Was His Fault.

In 1908, a seven-year-old named Seth Hascamp was ground to death under a train on 10th Avenue in Manhattan. The coroner ruled it his fault.
The East Side tracks had already been moved underground — because those residents had the political access to make it happen. The West Side was tenements. Between 1852 and 1908, 436 people were killed by the same train. The neighborhood called it The Butcher.

That street eventually became the High Line. You may have walked it.
