Wire rope fence to prevent human elephant conflict

Hosur Forest Division and Kenneth Anderson Nature Society (www.kans.org.in) have developed a wire rope fence based on the Armstrong fence of Addo National park, that has drastically reduced human elephant conflict where implemented in the Cauvery North Wildlife Sanctuary.
Elephants die accidentally due to road and rail accidents, electrocution, gun shots, by falling into open wells etc., when they venture into farm lands. Hundreds of humans are killed and crops and livelihoods destroyed due to this conflict.
Humans as well as elephants are unfortunate victims of this conflict caused due to a range of ecological issues.
The solution is to address habitat degradation and to prevent elephants from entering farm lands. Habitat restoration by eradicating alien invasive weeds, consolidation of fragmentation and securing corridors between viable habitats is the need of the hour.
This wire rope fence is an important part of the solution and has demonstrated effectiveness where other measures such as solar fences, elephant proof trenches etc have failed.
Along the 20 km forest boundary where the fence has been installed, human elephant conflict has come down from many hundreds of instances a year to just a small handful of instances. We still have another 150 kilometers to go
