Ar-Rabb: The Lord Who Never Abandons You | Hisham Abu Yusuf
In this deep and inspiring lecture, Ustadh Hisham Abu Yusuf explores one of the most frequently mentioned divine names in the Qur’an after “Allah” — Ar-Rabb.
Ar-Rabb carries two profound meanings:
The Nurturer & Caretaker – From tarbiyah, meaning to raise, nourish, and care for something until it reaches completion. Allah nurtures us through every stage of life, even when others turn away.
The Lord & Master – Rabb also means master, but unlike human slavery, servitude to Allah is rooted in love, gratitude, and mercy. To be Allah’s servant is the greatest honor.
Throughout the Qur’an, the Prophets called upon Allah as Rabb in their most desperate moments—Musa fleeing Egypt, Yunus in the whale, Yusuf in the well, and the Prophet ﷺ bleeding in Ta’if. In loneliness and struggle, Rabb was their comfort.
The Qur’an’s most beloved prayers begin with “Rabbana”—intimate supplications like Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah and Rabbana taqabbal minna. These duʿāʾs teach us to constantly speak to Allah as our Rabb.
True servitude (ʿUbūdiyyah) is not forced but chosen, like children serving parents out of love. The Prophet ﷺ, despite being forgiven, would pray long into the night, saying: “Should I not be a grateful servant?”
To know Allah as Ar-Rabb is to recognize Him as the One who manages every affair, raises us with mercy, and invites us into the honor of servitude. If we understood this, “Rabbana” would never leave our lips.
👉 Watch this lecture to strengthen your relationship with Ar-Rabb, the Nurturer, the Master, the One who never abandons His servants.
