Simplifying f(g(x)) with FOIL | Function Composition Explained (Circle Symbol ○ is Binary Operation)
Simplifying function composition is a major skill in Precalculus, including in Stewart’s textbook (Chapter 2) and most Unit 2 reviews. In this 60-second clip from a longer lesson, I simplify (f ○ g)(x) = f(g(x)), where f(x) = x² + 2x – 3 and g(x) = –3x + 2. I substitute g(x) into f, then use the FOIL method and the distributive property to expand and simplify. This is a classic algebra and precalculus skill that shows up in:
• unit tests
• cumulative exams
• ACT/SAT algebra prep
• calculus readiness topics
In the video, I explain why the circle symbol (○) is used to denote a binary operation on functions, how to mentally FOIL (–3x + 2)², how to combine like terms correctly, and why the final simplified expression becomes: 9x² – 18x + 5
