Nowadays you know that amongst the home remedies described for the pandemic, one is to take steam inhalation - to heat water in a pot and take in the steam by putting a towel over your head, second is oil pulling. We call it mukha-shuddhi – mouth purification in Ayurveda. And this is our Sumukh oil, by using this for oil pulling, the whole face becomes radiant and it prevents the sagging of the cheeks with increasing age. They skin remains firm and young. And there are many benefits, the teeth and gums remain strong and healthy, it prevents pus formation in the gums. The Kapha dosha accumulated in the sinuses and the brain is removed, thus there are numerous benefits of oil pulling. Normally oil is the ideal medium for performing Gandush-oil pulling. You might wonder what this Gandush is? Gandush is keeping oil or other liquids in the moth for 10 to 15 minutes, may also be swished from side to side-kaval and then spitted out. Then you may brush your teeth. Thus the action of holding oil in the mouth is called as Gandush.
Now when there is Vata or Kapha dosha, then this sesame oil is to be used. And if the pitta dosha is high, then coconut oil is ideal for oil pulling. Yet generally an oil that is suitable to most with medicinal herbs is prepared, yet if you don’t have all the herbs handy, then as a home remedy, you may use just plain oil, one teaspoon oil is to be taken. This oil when kept in the mouth, we need to be at peace, if one tries to speak, suddenly the oil may enter the nose or the throat and can cause trouble. Thus while holding the oil in the mouth, please be quiet and after some time spit it out. Sometimes one may perform Gandush with milk or cooked rice water. Sometimes some people have very sticky saliva, when they speak too one can see the saliva threads, for such people honey is used for oil pulling. In this manner, as per the need, these all substances may be used for oil pulling.
Thus there are many types of substances that can be used for oil pulling, yet popularly as the name suggests, oil is used. Therefore one that is suitable to all in general, who don’t want to go into the details for Vata, Pitta and Kapha, may use the general Sumukh oil.
This purifies the tongue, some times people have a bad breath, either some food gets stuck in the teeth or if there are carries or pyorrhoea the oil pulling is beneficial for all these conditions. The appetite improves, and one enjoys eating the food, otherwise if people don’t enjoy the taste of food, then they don’t eat properly and avoid eating vegetables, and eat only dry chapatis, then this leads to constipation and decrease in the digestive capacity. When there is something sweet, we should be able to enjoy the sweet taste, or else what people do, that they eat Shrikhand-sweetened joghurt and say that today the Shrikhand is nice but not sweet enough, it may be that your taste sensors are not optimum. Oil pulling increases the sensitivity of the taste sensors, in this way, there are many benefits of Gandush and this needs to be done everyday.
Like I said in the beginning, maybe for the pandemic this Gandush- oil pulling, so that the medicine has entered the oral passage int eh morning, then the pandemic viruses will not be successful in causing any harm. Thus you might be saved, so the importance of performing oil pulling.
We all have been doing this regularly in our family or our father he had all his teeth till hundred years of age and I too have all teeth intact, thus the benefits of Gandush are numerous and all of you may surely practice this with discipline.
