JUNETEENTH JAM SESSION (Quarantine Files)

Today is a day of celebration and reflection. We acknowledge and learn about our past to move forward into the future.

Juneteenth is a holiday that originated in Galveston, TX. It is celebrated because although slavery ended in the United States in 1863, people were still enslaved in Texas until federal troops came to inform the people that they were free. This has always been a trend in Amerikkka: enact federal laws that prohibit bigoted and hateful activity but allow states and individuals to continue on with the activity that is harmful to marginalized groups. It happened with slavery, voting rights, integration, etc.

BUT TODAY, we celebrate forward progress by acknowledging our roots and how far we came.
