The U.S. Army Handed Out 350 Billion Cigarettes During WW2 #ww2 #shorts

During World War II, cigarettes became deeply connected to military life.

The U.S. military and tobacco companies worked together to supply enormous quantities of cigarettes to American troops fighting overseas. By the end of the war, an estimated 350 billion cigarettes had been distributed to soldiers.

Cigarettes were commonly included inside ration packs and care packages, while companies heavily advertised smoking as part of soldier culture during the war.

For many troops, smoking became a way to cope with stress, fear, exhaustion, and long periods spent in combat zones across Europe and the Pacific.

Cigarettes were also frequently traded between soldiers and even used as unofficial currency in some wartime areas.

At the time, the long-term health effects of smoking were not fully understood, and tobacco was widely promoted throughout both military and civilian society.

The wartime normalization of smoking would later contribute to one of the largest public health crises of the 20th century.
