Express ADDA With Karan Johar
ON Friday evening, multi-faceted filmmaker Karan Johar will be the guest at the Express Adda in Mumbai.
The 44-year-old’s films, such as his directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and including Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) and My Name is Khan (2010), have been among the most successful Hindi films in recent history, making him one of Indian cinema’s most influential filmmakers.
Johar’s upcoming projects include the Nitya Mehra-directed Baar Baar Dekho, which releases on September 9, and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, written and directed by Johar himself, which is slated to release this Diwali.
At the Express Adda, the filmmaker will be in conversation with Anant Goenka, Executive Director, The Express Group, and Shubhra Gupta, film critic, The Indian Express.
Johar’s career in the Hindi film industry began when he assisted Aditya Chopra on Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995). He’s gone on to
wear many hats — as writer, director, producer, actor, fashion designer, columnist and host of the clutter-breaking and hugely successful television chat show, Koffee with Karan.
Johar’s directorial debut — produced, as all subsequent directorial projects, under Dharma Productions — was instrumental in introducing a youthful and highly stylised idiom of filmmaking. Along with Chopra and Sooraj Barjatya, he was responsible for changing the format of stories in Hindi cinema, creating his own brand of glossy “Indian-but-modern” family dramas. But, as he showed recently with “Kapoor & Sons”, which he produced, he’s also been unafraid of texture and shades of grey.
