Helen Keller with Mother & Brother - 1919 Film Footage

Year - 1919 - Helen Keller is shown with her mother, Kate Keller and brother, Phillips Brooks Keller. From the 1919 silent film about Helen, titled "Deliverance". Anne Sullivan and companion Polly Thomson also appear in the film. Enjoy! Transcript and description : The film opens with the movie credits. "Mr. George Kleine presents The most wonderful woman in the world. Institute of France." The next credit shows a female figure in the background, holding a torch, with the words Helen Keller. Helen is shown briefly standing in profile. She sits down. A representation of the earth turning on it's axis with smoke surrounding it appears briefly. The first caption reads, " As I touch the new blown flowers, they wake an ecstasy in my heart. My darkness is made beautiful by their form and fragrance." The movie camera shows Helen standing in a field of flowers. picking an armload of blossoms. The next caption reads. "One of the mysteries of Helen's life. Science cannot explain how she can distinguish colors by the touch ". The camera shows Helen standing with a bouquet of flowers, as she smiles and handles and smells the blooms. Then Helen and her mother are shown wearing long dresses, walking arm in arm down a path that is lined with palm trees and other tropical plants. The caption reads, " Mrs. Kate Keller. Mother! the sweetest word in all languages". The next caption reads, " Phillips Brooks Keller, Helen's brother. A crusader in the conquest of the air ". Helen's brother joins Helen and Kate among the palm trees. He is in his twenties or early thirties and dressed in a world war one air force uniform. He removes his hat and hugs Helen. They communicate through sign language for a short time. Phillips kisses his mother on the cheek, and the next caption shows a rising sun among clouds, and reads, "On the morrow". The next scene shows a group of people surrounding an early model double winged bi-plane. The group includes Helen Keller, Anne Sullivan, Polly Thomson, and Helen's mother and brother. Anne Sullivan and Polly Thomson are shown assisting Helen to dress in a heavy leather flight jacket, as Kate and Phillips Keller watch. Helen is wearing a round leather flight cap on her head. Helen climbs up into the plane's two seated cockpit as a co-pilot in the front seat. A man starts the plane's propeller by pushing on it with his hands. The plane rolls along an empty field and lifts into the air. The planes flies very high, and appears very tiny in the sky. Anne, Polly, Kate and Phillips Keller are shown standing and looking upward at the plane and talking to each other. The camera mounted on the wing shows Helen smiling as she flies far above the earth. The plane lands. Everyone runs up to the plane, as Helen rushes out of the plane and hugs Anne Sullivan. The caption reads, " It is wonderful. As if the chains which bind us to the earth snapped, and set us free! ". The film clip ends with Helen standing in the field of flowers, picking blossoms again.
