Woodturning | A Woodturners Finish | Grit & Sheen

William Hunt woodturner describes and demonstrates his standard method of finish for turned pieces. Its all about Grit & Sheen.

With full acknowledgement to Martis Saben Smith and Glyn Senior for tips and methodologies.

I've been many times in the past few weeks about my “default woodturning finish” and exactly what that entails. I recently described this process in another video but I've revised the process in the light of new products and techniques.

Shortcuts:

00.01 Introduction, blah, blah, blah
04:56 Sanding/abrasive.
06:59 Cleaning the surface.
08:27 Sanding sealer.
11:39 Denibbing, more sanding sealer
14:47 Yorkshire Grit
18:20 Yorkshire Grit Microfine
20:18 Hampshire Sheen High Gloss with hot air gun
23:28 Hampshire Sheen Microcrystalline Wax
24:55 Conclusion

The changes I made to the finish process involve sanding sealer and the application of the wax.

In this YouTube video, I go through the process in real time, attempting to describe the techniques as I go along.

When using woodturning hot wax method, remember:

1. Always use an electric hot air gun, never use a blowtorch or other instrument with a naked flame.
2. Have a fire extinguishing capability handy.
3. Keep other flammable materials at a distance.
4. Wear eye protection and never wear latex of nitrile gloves. Wear leather or flame retardant gloves if you have them.
5. Make sure the area is well ventilated.
