There are real dangers in ‘inventing hatred’ amid ongoing BLM movement

The recent scandal involving NASCAR’s Bubba Wallace highlights the dangers of overstating the prevalence of racism and inventing unnecessary hatred, according to Sky News host Chris Kenny.

The FBI launched an investigation into whether a rope found in the garage of Bubba Wallace, NASCAR’s only black driver, was a noose.

If it was, this action could constitute a hate crime.

Before the FBI report was handed down Mr Wallace took to twitter to address the issue.

“Today's despicable act of racism and hatred leaves me incredibly saddened and serves as a painful reminder of how much further we have to go as a society and how persistent we must be in the fight against racism," Mr Wallace said.

However, after a comprehensive investigation, the FBI found the rope was merely rope attached to the garage.

“The FBI report concludes, and photographic evidence confirms, that the garage door pull rope fashioned like a noose had been positioned there since as early as last fall,” NASCAR said in a statement.

“We appreciate the FBI’s quick and thorough investigation and are thankful to learn that this was not an intentional, racist act against Bubba.”

Mr Kenny said this remarkable episode shows how society needs to be calm and rational because when there is group hysteria, sometimes people tend to “conjure up racism and hatred even where it doesn’t exist”.

“There is a salient lesson here, and that is not to presume the worst in people, not to assign motives, intent and attitudes to others,” Mr Kenny said.

“This episode shows the dangers of overstating the problem, inventing hatred, when we all know there's far more goodness around, far more tolerance, than the opposite.”
