At George Washington High School in San Francisco, murals by Victor Arnautoff features George Washington, the brutal general and slave owner, among enslaved Africans and a dead Native American. Artist Dewey Crumpler, who painted a counter mural, explains the contradiction of the man.

George Washington is known as one of the Founding Fathers but to the Iroquois, he was the Town Destroyer/Hanodaga:yas. At San Francisco's George Washington High School, a New Deal mural by Victor Arnautoff reframes the legacy of the first president of the United States as a slave owner and a general who ordered the genocide of Native Americans.

TOWN DESTROYER delves into a mural dispute at a school, spotlighting Washington’s complex legacy, including “town destroyer” by the Seneca. This ignites national debates on public art and history amidst racial reckoning. A documentary film by Alan Snitow and Deborah Kaufman.
