In 1958, Clancy I. was a 22-year-old drunk thrown out of the Midnight Mission on Skid Row.

One year later, sober, he stood at a podium in Los Angeles and gave this talk, his first known recorded message in A.A.

No one could have imagined that the same man would later return to that mission and serve as its Managing Director for decades.

In this powerful 1959 recording, Clancy shares the raw truth of early sobriety, the resistance, the remorse, and the moment he realized:

“Whatever my difficulties are, drinking won’t help them.”
