Using the Warré hives as mating nucs. Here I remove all brood for the summer treatment against varroa and using the brood split to get another round of queens mated.
Two frames with open brood and old queen go down in a fresh box. Top feeder above it, an inner lid above the feeder. The box with the rest of the brood goes straight on top of this. After two hours it gets a ripe queen cell or an artificial cell with a young yet unmated queen. (Nicot queen cell "Secondary emerging cell". It is not the cell protector and not a cage. It is a small artificial queen cell.) The queen stays in that cell until bees behave friendly and feed the queens through the small air hole in the wax flake. If given after two hours (not much longer, no shorter), the queen gets accepted very well. Queen frees herself in about 10-15 minutes. If bees are aggressive towards her, she stays protected inside the cell until bees calm down and it is safe to emerge. Pretty good acceptance of introduced queens. Reliable and reproducible results.
