"Sorting Info and Reason for Anvil"
you need the anvil to rename the dirt that will be placed in the other 4 slots in the hopper. It is optional but it creates a extra form of security for your sorting system. When you rename the item, for example dirt, if someone puts a dirt block in the system to get sorted the renamed "dirt" will not recognize the dirt block and wont sort it in those 4 slots, plus if you add anything more to the 4 slots it will make the signal strength stronger and mess up its own setup plus the ones next to it causing the design to fail.
