The year is 1962. Three men have done what was thought to be impossible. The location? Alcatraz Prison. The most secure penitentiary on the planet. Many had tried to escape before, but all attempts had failed… Until one day.

Now, you may be thinking this sounds like a movie. And the truth is, the story we are about to explore in today’s video was indeed adapted into a feature film starring none other than Clint Eastwood in the lead. We are of course talking about the great Alcatraz escape, where three men were able to break out of their cells, scale the walls and fences, and cross the San Francisco Bay to freedom. At least, that’s what the legend would want you to think. Truth is, these men were never heard from again. And while they did get rather far in their attempt at breaking out of their cells, authorities claim that they met their end when they tried to cross the Bay to their freedom. But, what can science tell us about this escape? Is it even TECHNICALLY possible for someone to make it out alive, and cross the frigid waters? Today we are looking at one of the most famous prison escapes of all time. And we are looking at just how high, how far, and how long these men would have to travel to get to freedom, and decide if they really could have made it to shore. Some people to this day still believe that they made it! Despite the FBI closing the case many years ago. We’ll let you be the judge. So get ready to climb, sneak, and swim your way to freedom in today’s video Brainiacs, as we learn the science behind the great Alcatraz escape.
