Global National: Oct. 26, 2020 | One COVID-19 vaccine starting to show promise

After eight months of COVID-19 and a second wave rising as winter approaches, it is easy to get discouraged. While there is no end in sight to the pandemic, there is a glimmer of good news about a possible vaccine. Drug maker AstraZeneca says the vaccine being developed at the University of Oxford, which is in the late stages of human trials, has had positive results in older people. Eric Sorensen explains why it appears to be a breakthrough.

The advice to reduce the number of people we come into contact with to reduce the spread of COVID-19 was repeated by politicians and health officials again Monday. More than 2,500 new cases were reported across Canada today. In Ontario, tight restrictions are in place in several places and officials have warned that they could be extended to at least two other regions, though no decision has been made yet. Mike Drolet reports.

Federal opposition parties all voted in favour of a Conservative motion to investigate the Canadian government's handling of the coronavirus pandemic. It's not a confidence vote, but the Liberals warned it could endanger Canada's ability to procure a vaccine and personal protective equipment. Mike Le Couteur explains.

In the U.S., there's one week left for President Donald Trump and Democratic rival Joe Biden to win over voters. More than 60 million voters have already made up their minds and cast their votes either by mail or in-person even as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to see surges in the country. As Jackson Proskow reports, President Trump's campaign strategy appears to be to downplay the impact of the virus which has killed over 200,000 Americans.

While Abbotsford is not the cosmopolitan capital of British Columbia, low-cost carrier Swoop is now counting on Canadians travelling between Toronto and Vancouver to use that suburban city as a landing pad. As Robin Gill reports, the airline is hoping Canadians will be sweeping up deals and travel within Canada.

As the Nov. 3 election approaches, it's become so polarized it's sometimes not easy to have a civilized conversation with voters about who they think should be the next president. President Trump likes to say no one has more devoted supporters than he does. Mike Armstrong went to a Trump rally in Pennsylvania to talk to supporters about why their man deserves another four years.
