May Day 1970: The "Bulldog and the Panther" Radicals Gather at Yale a Day Before Protest

The May Day 1970 protests were a series of demonstrations across the United States, most notably in New Haven, Connecticut, in support of the trial of Bobby Seale and other Black Panther leaders charged with the murder of Alex Rackley in 1969. The rallies were part of a broader wave of anti-Vietnam War and civil rights activism that summer.
New Haven Rally - On May 1, 1970, an estimated 15,000–30,000 people gathered on the New Haven Green and Yale’s Old Campus. The event was organized by the local Black Panthers and joined by activists from across the country, uniting diverse political and racial groups under the banner of “Free the New Haven Panthers.” Speakers included Allen Ginsberg and Jerry Rubin, and bands performed without incident.
Yale’s administration, faculty, and students worked to keep the protest peaceful, opening campus to all participants and avoiding confrontations. Despite fears of violence—fueled by Nixon’s desire to portray the left as dangerous, the day was peaceful, with only minor disruptions.
Broader Context - The protests coincided with the Kent State shootings on May 4, where four students were killed and nine wounded by Ohio National Guardsmen. This national tragedy intensified anti-war sentiment and drew more students to campus demonstrations.
The May Day rallies also reflected the anti-imperialist and labor justice themes of the era, with calls for fair wages, an end to racist policies, and opposition to U.S. foreign intervention.
Significance - The New Haven protests are remembered as a model of peaceful protest during a turbulent political climate. They demonstrated the ability of diverse groups to unite for a common cause without resorting to violence, and they highlighted the role of campus communities in shaping public discourse on civil rights and anti-war issues.
The story "May Day" refers to several intertwined nationally historic events that occurred some 50 years ago, starting with the 1969 torture and death of 19 yr old Alex Rackley an FBI Informant by members of the Black Panthers, leading to the arrest of Bobby Seale and other Black Panther members referred to as the "New Haven Nine".
The story then deals with upcoming Black Panther Rally to free Bobby Seale and the New Haven Nine who were scheduled to go on trial that Spring for the murder of Rackley.
The agreement later coined the "Bulldog and the Panther", was reached between Yale President Kingman Brewster and the Yippie Radical Leaders to demonstrate, preach non-violence and instill calm on the New Haven Green and the Yippie Radicals would not be interfered with by the New Haven Police, the FBI, and the National Guard.
New Haven was sparked by the violence that both Harvard Rally and Kent State Massacre incurred.
In short, May Day 1970 was both a local civil rights stand and a national symbol of nonviolent resistance, standing in contrast to the violence that marked other campus confrontations that summer.
