Flying the JAPAN’s NEW AIRLINE - AIR JAPAN's First Flight

Air Japan, ANA’s NEW Low Cost Carrier, took to the skies for the first time last month. ANA is one of my favorite airline brands, so I was very curious about this new airline before the flight. Fortunately I flew on the inaugural flight of Air Japan from Tokyo Narita to Bangkok.

In anticipation of the celebrations for the inaugural flight, I arrived at Tokyo Narita Airport 3 hours before scheduled boarding time. The gate area was super festive, with music, gift bags, a ton of media people and aviation geeks. The atmosphere was certainly fun and everyone was excited about this historic flight. AirJapan’s President and CEO, Hideki Mineguchi, said “ANA Group have been working together as one to make preparations for this brand new airline” at a ceremony. As we even boarded the aircraft, President, Hideki Mineguchi, and cabin crew were waiting at the gate to personally greet every passenger and hand out a gift bag.

The first thing you'll notice on Air Japan’s 787 is there is no business class, no premium economy seating sections. However, the legroom was totally okay for a low cost airline! It’s 32 inches (approximately 81 cm). The aircraft outfitted with 324 seats in an all-economy configuration.

Air Japan doesn’t provide free meals and drinks, so I had pre-purchased a Sushi Box and Fresh Fruits. The sushi was fresh and delicious. It was a lot better than I was expecting.

However, unfortunately, there were some issues on the flight. First was the seat belt sign of the second cabin section didn’t work since we were starting our approach into Bangkok. The second cabin section’s stereo sounding speaker system didn’t also work function properly, so I couldn’t hear what the cabin crew was saying after landing. I think this is an important issue about passenger's safety. There was also an issue about in-flight wifi and the mobile ordering system.

I genuinely enjoyed the flight, though they still had some service kinks to work out. I think no one is perfect and what more a new airline’s first flight like this. I do hope some issues of the flight can be ironed out with subsequent flights.  Check out the vlog! ✈️
