Deadliest Journeys - Pakistan, mountain top highway

Just one road, the Lowari Pass, vital for bringing supplies to villagers, links Dir, a small town in the tribal lands of the North West of Pakistan to the Chitral valley on the border with Afghanistan. 240 kilometres long, the Lowari Pass is the only way through the mountains. Taking this road is no picnic: it snakes between the mountain and its dizzy cliff-top drops. It should take a day to do the whole trip, but that rarely is the case. We made the journey with Dawood, a truck operator. At 23, he drives back and forth constantly¾the more journeys he makes the higher the risk of an accident. In the extremes of cold and heat, fatigue can hit without warning. Concentration must remain at the maximum because the least mistake can be fatal. So, Dawood never travels without his brother, Kahlid, just 14 years old, who is there as support and to learn the business. Like them, all those that take this road, drivers, travellers, shopkeepers, have to deal with dust, snow, torrents and rock falls. In view of the high number of accidents, the Pakistani government has launched a project to drive a tunnel through the mountain. This initiative delights the truck drivers, who will no longer be forced, at the risk of their lives, to climb to the top of the Lowari Pass, perched at an altitude of 3,100 meters. It is also believed that the opening of the tunnel will lower the valley’s very high unemployment rate by 50%. -
